What’s the riskiest hobby you have?

Are you now thinking about the risks involved in your existing or new sports venture?

I can do this...

When we asked our Compliance Director Sally Beck about the risks involved in her chosen sport, we didnt expect to then find an update to our software as a result. What did  we expect, she is also our chartered safety professional as well.

Watch the video and decide for yourself, whatever the risk our risk assessment software can assess the risk. It also has an extreme sports risk template ready for you to use.

I only took up flyboarding this summer.  Definetly lots of fun and an amazing experience. After lots of falls, I finally learnt how to balance. The team at Aquatic Jetpacks are all proffessional flyboard instructors, they provided expert tuition and ofcourse risk controls and equipment. Thanks to them ‘I can do this’ with confidence.

...with safe, expert training

The risk assessment for flyboarding is definitely technical, and safe, when the right training is completed. We recommend using a specialist commpany in their field.  If you are after an exciting corporate day out or want to learn this and other exciting water sports yourself then book Aquatic Jetpacks based in Sandbanks, Poole Harbour, Dorset who provide corporate team experiences and expert training.

Extreme Sports Risk Assessment

Here are a few of the risks, don’t be put off, make it happen safely. With the correct training, equipment, and safety controls the risks associated with any extreme sport can be minimised. Flyboarding, like other extreme sports is no different.

Injury from Falls: Flyboarding involves being propelled into the air by a powerful water jet, so falls are common when you are learning. Training on how to land safely is clearly important, landing incorrectly on water can cause bruising, sprains, fractures, or even concussions.

Impact with Equipment: The flyboard, water hoses, or the jet ski controlling the system all pose a risk. Accidental collisions with them may result in injuries such as cuts, bruises, or more serious injury.

Water Impact Injuries: High-speed impacts with water can be surprisingly dangerous, leading to injuries like whiplash, broken ribs, or facial trauma if a participant hits the water at the wrong angle. While learning your instructors will control this dependant on your skill level.

Drowning Risk: While participants wear life vests, improper use or falling unconscious due to injury or panic could increase the risk of drowning.

Lack of Control: Flyboarding requires balance and coordination as Sally has already experienced. Inexperienced users may have difficulty controlling their movement, leading to accidental crashes or unexpected movements, increasing injury risks.

Physical Strain: Flyboarding places stress on the legs, core, and arms. For those not physically prepared, this could lead to muscle strain or overexertion, especially for those with underlying health conditions. According to Sally, this is a really good thing and will strengthen you over time, you will need to take it slowly at first.

Ear and Sinus Issues: Rapid changes in water pressure can cause ear or sinus injuries, particularly if a participant plunges too deep or experiences rapid ascent or descent.

Environmental Hazards: Obstacles like rocks, boats, or shallow waters can pose a danger if a participant loses control or if the activity is performed in an unsafe environment. Make sure you know the depth of water and its environment.

Jet Ski Operator Error: Flyboarding is dependent on a skilled jet ski operator to control the power of the water jets. Inexperienced or negligent operators can create unsafe conditions for participants. As we have already stated, choose a reputable company for your training.

Weather and Water Conditions: Poor weather or water conditions, such as strong winds, or underwater hazards, can increase the likelihood of accidents. Whilst it can be frustrating having a session cancelled, your trainer is responsible for your and their team safety. There is always another calm day coming soon.

Don’t take unnecessary or uncontrolled risk and you too could enjoy this growing and exhilarating water sport.
