Fire Extinguisher Use

Using a fire extinguisher can be a crucial step in controlling a small fire before it grows out of control.

Using a fire extinguisher can be a crucial step in controlling a small fire before it grows out of control. Please see the steps to follow when using a fire extinguisher, outlined below.

  1. Assess the situation: Make sure that the fire is small and can be safely extinguished with a fire extinguisher. If the fire is large or spreading rapidly, evacuate the area immediately and call the fire department.
  2. Choose the right fire extinguisher: Select the appropriate type of fire extinguisher based on the type of fire. Refer to the label on the extinguisher for guidance. In some instances, using the wrong type can actually make the fire worse and endanger lives.

  • Class A Fire Extinguishers: Designed to extinguish fires caused by ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, and cloth. These are identified by a green triangle and the letter “A” on the label.
  • Class B Fire Extinguishers: Designed to extinguish fires caused by flammable liquids such as gasoline, oil, and paint. These are identified by a red square and the letter “B” on their label.
  • Class C Fire Extinguishers: Designed to extinguish fires caused by electrical equipment such as appliances and tools. These are identified by a blue circle and the letter “C” on their label.
  • Class D Fire Extinguishers: Designed to extinguish fires caused by combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, and potassium. These are identified by a yellow decagon and the letter “D” on their label.
  • Class K Fire Extinguishers: Designed to extinguish fires caused by cooking oils and fats in commercial kitchens. These are identified by a black hexagon and the letter “K” on their label.

  1. Pull the pin: Pull the pin on the fire extinguisher to release the locking mechanism.
  2. Aim at the base of the fire: Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, not at the flames themselves.
  3. Squeeze the handle: Squeeze the handle of the extinguisher to release the extinguishing agent.
  4. Sweep the nozzle from side to side: Sweep the nozzle or hose of the extinguisher from side to side, covering the area of the fire with the extinguishing agent.
  5. Monitor the fire: Continue to use the extinguisher until the fire is fully extinguished. Keep an eye on the area for any signs of re-ignition.

Remember it is essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific fire extinguisher you are using. Fire extinguishers must be inspected regularly and maintained to ensure their effectiveness.
