Overview
World Mental Health Day falls on October 10th this year and the theme is ‘It is time to prioritise mental health in the workplace’. Two thousand participants from over a hundred countries contributed to the selection process for deciding this year’s theme. This emphasises the critical importance of creating supportive work environments. Such environments promote mental well-being, reduce stigma, and provide resources for employees to seek help when they feel they need it.
The Impact of Mental Health at Work
Mental health issues in the workplace manifests in many forms. It can impact employees by bringing about feelings of anxiety, stress and depression, leading to decreased job satisfaction; difficulty concentrating and higher risk of burnout. It can impact the organisation by contributing to increased turnover, damaged reputation, decreased productivity and legal issues related to discrimination and harassment.
Strategies for Prioritising Mental Health in the Workplace
Organisational Culture and Policies. Employers should do what they can to promote mental health awareness. They should develop Mental Health Policies and consider providing Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs).
Leadership and Management. Role modeling and empathetic leadership are important. There should be mandatory Mental Health training for managers.
Workplace Environment. Employers need to look at physical stress reduction i.e. implementing noise control and providing ergonomic workstations. Work-Life Balance should be encouraged, promoting a positive workplace culture.
Employee Resources. Employers should provide employee-centered Mental Health / Stress Management Training. They should offer peer support groups. Wellness Programs may be launched, to encourage healthy lifestyle choices.
Open Communication and Support. Employers should ensure an open dialogue, acknowledging and addressing mental health concerns in the workplace. Confidentiality regarding employee health information should be upheld at all times.
