The Workplace First Aid Kit

A well-stocked first aid kit is an important component of any safe and responsible workplace. Minor ailments and injuries are a part of daily life and ensuring that the necessary supplies are readily available can make a difference in the initial response and potential outcome.

First Aid Kit Contents

The contents of a first aid kit should be based on your organisation’s first aid needs assessment. As a guide, where work activities are low risk, a first aid kit might contain the following items.

  • Sterile adhesive bandages in various sizes, gauze pads, non-stick sterile dressings, and elastic wraps, for treating cuts, scrapes, and burns
  • Cleansing and disinfecting supplies, e.g. antiseptic wipes, sterile saline solution, and mild soap
  • Sterile eye pads
  • Disposable gloves, tweezers, face masks and safety pins
  • A guidance leaflet on general first aid in the workplace

Additional considerations might include items such as a thermometer, sterile eye wash and cold compresses. However, it is important that the specific contents reflect the potential hazards and risks associated with your industry and work environment. A construction site first aid kit may require heavy duty bandages and splints, whereas an office might benefit from supplies for treating allergies, indigestion and headaches. As always, ensure to follow local legislation.

Maintenance of the First Aid Kit

The first aid kit should be checked regularly. Many items, particularly sterile ones, are marked with expiry dates. Replace any expired items, disposing of them safely. If a sterile item doesn’t have an expiry date, check with the manufacturer to find out how long it can be kept as part of the kit. Ensure the kit is easily accessible and clearly labelled for everyone in the workplace.

Take the initiative to ensure your workplace is prepared to handle any unexpected situations.

Remember to check your organisation’s first aid training register as part of the first aid needs assessment. Training should be refreshed at regular intervals. By ensuring suitable first aid provisions are in place, you can create a safer work environment for everyone.
