School governors have a legal responsibility to ensure the health and safety of everyone on the school premises, including pupils, staff, visitors, and contractors. This means taking steps to identify and assess hazards, and to implement appropriate control measures to reduce the risk of injury or illness.

Health and Safety guidelines for School Governors:

Appoint a health and safety link governor. The health and safety link governor is responsible for leading the governing board’s oversight of health and safety. They should have a good understanding of health and safety legislation and best practice.

Develop and approve health and safety policies and procedures. The governing board should approve a range of health and safety policies and procedures, including policies on fire safety, electrical safety, slip and trip hazards, and risk assessment. These policies and procedures should be regularly reviewed and updated.

Monitor the school’s health and safety performance. The governing board should monitor the school’s health and safety performance through a variety of means, such as reviewing accident and incident reports, risk assessments, and audit reports. The board should also consider feedback from staff and pupils on health and safety matters.

Ensure that staff are adequately trained and equipped. The governing board should ensure that staff are adequately trained and equipped to manage health and safety risks. This includes providing training on risk assessment, fire safety, and first aid.

Respond promptly to any accidents or incidents. The governing board should ensure that the school has a plan for responding to any accidents or incidents. This plan should be regularly reviewed and tested.

Additional Health and Safety tips for School Governors:

  • Make health and safety a regular agenda item at governing board meetings.
  • Involve staff and pupils in health and safety activities.
  • Visit the school on a regular basis to observe health and safety practices in action.
  • Encourage staff to report any hazards or concerns.
  • Be prepared to invest in resources to improve health and safety.
  • Stay up to date with the latest health and safety legislation and guidance.

School governors play a vital role in promoting health and safety in their schools. By following the guidelines above, governors can help ensure that everyone on the school premises stays safe and healthy.
