Guidelines for Risk Assessment in the Workplace

Identify Hazards: Carry out a thorough inspection of the workplace, considering all activities, equipment, substances, and practices. Identify potential causes of harm, for example slips, trips and falls, electrical hazards, fire hazards and exposure to hazardous substances.

Identify People at Risk: Determine who may be harmed by each identified hazard. Consider employees, visitors/members of the public, contractors and maintenance staff.

Assess the Risk: Ascertain the likelihood of someone being harmed by each hazard. Think about the severity of potential injuries or illnesses. A risk matrix can be used to categorise risks based on likelihood and severity (normally a scale from low to high).

Control Measures: The elimination of hazards should be prioritised if possible. If this isn’t feasible, implement control measures. Examples of control measures include safety training for employees and the provision of PPE.

Document: The risk assessment findings should be documented. Include all the details, communicate this with relevant staff and ensure that control measures are implemented.

Review: Regularly review the risk assessment, especially after workplace incidents and upon the introduction of new equipment, processes or substances.
