Every day, employees and school staff clean up their space. It is important to clean regularly and deep clean when needed to avoid mould buildup, and to avoid employees developing health issues. It is also equally important to ensure the workspace is decluttered regularly to avoid trips, slips, and falls. However, when cleaning, many health and safety hazards arise, and it is essential that employers effectively train their staff members to avoid and minimise the risks involved with cleaning. Here are some health and safety tips to follow in the workplace:

  • Employers should train staff in cleaning techniques, handling chemicals, and using equipment safely.
  • Provide the appropriate PPE to staff for handling chemicals.
  • Ensure staff are aware of the possible dangers of each chemical, and how to spot irritation from these chemicals.
  • Ventilate the area being cleaned properly and use signs when an area is being cleaned to avoid slips, trips, and falls.
  • Regularly inspect and test cleaning equipment to ensure it is safe to use.
  • Ensure that electrical equipment is in good condition and make sure to not get cleaning supplies or water on outlets.
  • Provide clear points for waste disposal of chemicals.
  • Ensure staff are trained in cleaning of biohazardous waste to avoid infection.
  • Train staff on what to do in an emergency and first aid procedures.

Cleaning with chemicals and equipment can be hazardous without the correct training, so to avoid emergencies and injury, always follow safety measures cautiously.
