Guidelines for effective Chemical Safety Management
Know your workplace chemicals
Maintain an inventory of all chemicals used, including their Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Regularly assess the hazards associated with each chemical, considering factors like flammability, toxicity, and reactivity. Train employees on understanding the SDS and its key information.
Implement a hierarchy of risk control
The hierarchy of control prioritises methods to eliminate or minimise hazards at their source. Methods range from most effective to least; elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Maintain safe storage and handling
Separate incompatible chemicals i.e. acids and bases and ensure to maintain safe distances between flammable and oxidising agents. Utilise appropriate containers which have secure closures and secondary containment for leaks or spills. Clearly label all containers. Train employees on safe handling techniques when it comes to chemicals.
Emergency preparedness and response
Develop an emergency response plan which outlines procedures for spills, fires, and other incidents involving chemicals. Train employees on this and conduct regular drills. Provide accessible eyewash stations, safety showers, fire extinguishers, and spill kits.
Training
Ensure all employees receive comprehensive training on chemical safety protocols, hazard communication, and emergency procedures. Maintain communication regarding updates on safety policies, procedures, and incidents.
