Supporting Local Sustainability: Restoring Native Oysters to the Solent

iProtectU is proud to support the Final Straw Foundation’s Native Oyster Restoration Project, helping restore over 10,000 native European flat oysters to the Solent. As part of our CSR commitment, our team joined volunteers at the Institute of Marine Sciences to prepare oysters for reintroduction, contributing to cleaner waters, improved biodiversity, and long-term ecological recovery.

Community Action for Cleaner Seas

At iProtectU, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) isn’t a box we tick, it’s embedded in everything we do. Our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable local impact drives us to support initiatives that protect and rejuvenate our natural ecosystems.

One of our most recent support initiatives exemplifies this perfectly: our support of the Final Straw Foundation and their ambitious Native Oyster Restoration Project in the Solent.

Representatives Sally Beck (iProtectU Ltd) and Diana Moloney (Artemis Training and Consultancy Ltd) joined the volunteer efforts at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Portsmouth (Ferry Rd, Southsea, PO4 9LY), helping prepare oysters for their return to the Solent.

Reviving a Lost Legacy: Bringing Oysters Back to the Solent

Once abundant across the Solent, native European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) formed the backbone of thriving coastal ecosystems and local economies. Today, however, their populations have declined by an extraordinary 95% since the 1800s – an impact caused by overexploitation, pollution, habitat loss, and disease.

Yet these oysters are more than a historical footnote. They are ecosystem engineers, playing a crucial role in:

  • Improving water quality through filtration
  • Reducing excess nutrients and algal blooms
  • Stabilising sediment
  • Creating habitat for marine life
  • Supporting rich biodiversity

A single adult oyster can filter up to 200 litres of water per day, making them one of nature’s most effective tools for maintaining healthy marine environments.

A Local Project Making a Global Difference

This winter, under the guidance of the Blue Marine Foundation, the Final Straw Foundation will begin restoring native oysters to our local waters. The project will install 10,000 oysters across four sites in the Solent, where their impact on water quality and biodiversity will be carefully monitored.

These oysters will also act as broodstock, releasing millions of larvae to help restore the long-lost populations across the Solent. It’s a small but powerful step toward rebalancing our marine ecosystems – right on our doorstep.

iProtectU is proud to be part of this initiative, joining other local partners and volunteers in hands-on conservation work.

Before being introduced into the water, each oyster must be cleaned to ensure no harmful contaminants are transferred into delicate marine ecosystems. This painstaking – but crucial preparation ensures:

  • No foreign species or pollutants reach the restoration sites
  • Healthy oysters can thrive in their new habitat
  • The ecosystem remains protected throughout the process

It’s detailed, hands-on work that reflects the collaborative spirit at the heart of successful local conservation.

Why This Matters to iProtectU

Sustainability is deeply aligned with our company ethos. Our goal has always been to create safer, healthier environments—not only in workplaces but also within the communities we live and work in.

Supporting this project allows us to:

  • Contribute to local environmental restoration
  • Promote biodiversity and protect natural ecosystems
  • Engage staff in meaningful community action
  • Strengthen our CSR commitments with measurable positive impact

This partnership is one of many steps iProtectU is taking to support environmental resilience and champion sustainability as part of our everyday operations.

A Community Effort With Lasting Impact

The passion and dedication of volunteers are what make this project possible. From building oyster habitats to monitoring biodiversity and preparing the oysters for installation, the community’s involvement is at the heart of this restoration success story.

The frameworks developed by the Blue Marine Foundation have empowered groups like the Final Straw Foundation – and supporters like iProtectU and Artemis Training and Consultancy to take meaningful local action for the health of our marine environment.

Together, we can restore what has been lost and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Looking Ahead

As the oysters settle into their new homes this winter, water quality and biodiversity monitoring will continue throughout the project. We look forward to seeing the measurable benefits of this nature-based solution – and to continuing our support for environmental initiatives that align with our values and purpose.

iProtectU is proud to have provided support to the Final Straw Foundation in protecting our coastal ecosystems and fostering local sustainability.
