Heat safety in the summer

It is estimated that around 90% of skin damage is due to sun exposure without wearing a suitable SPF lotion, and although it may be tempting to assume that indoor workspaces protect us from the sun’s harmful rays, the reality is that UV radiation can still penetrate windows and cause damage to our skin.

It is important to be aware of this risk and take appropriate precautions to protect ourselves while at work or at home.

To minimise the risk of sun damage, follow these sun safety tips:

  • Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats, to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and apply it generously to all exposed skin areas. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.
  • Seek shade during peak sun hours, which are typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays to protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them.
  • Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps, as they can emit UV radiation that is harmful to the skin.
  • Be extra cautious near water, snow, and sand, as they can reflect the sun’s rays and increase your risk of sunburn.
  • Check your skin regularly for any changes, such as new moles, growths, or spots, and see a dermatologist if you notice anything unusual.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day to help your body regulate its temperature and prevent dehydration, which can increase your risk of heat-related illnesses.
  • Be aware that certain medications, such as some antibiotics and acne treatments, can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, so take extra precautions when using them.
