Health and Safety while Travelling on Public Transport

Public transport comes with many risks to your health and safety. Not only is public transport dangerous – with trains, busses, and taxis travelling at high speed on the road, but public transport also poses the risk of bacteria spreading and thus could increase one’s chances of contracting illness and disease.

However, you can minimise these risks by following the health and safety tips below.

  • Wear a face covering whilst on public transport if you are at risk of illness.
  • Practise good hand hygiene by washing and disinfecting after and before touching any handrails or seats, on public transport.
  • Maintain physical distance from passengers, especially while waiting at stations, or boarding vehicles.
  • Follow any seating or standing guidelines when necessary.
  • Avoid touching your face, mouth, and eyes while travelling.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing and dispose of the tissue properly.
  • Use contactless payment means to minimise the physical contact you have with objects within the public transport vehicle.
  • Stay informed about any timetable changes.
  • If the weather is hot, wear sun cream with a suitable SPF, and carry water with you at all times.
  • If you are feeling unwell, avoid using public transport, and seek medical help if necessary.
  • Provide feedback to the transport operator surrounding any concerns or suggestions you have regarding health and safety on public transport.

By following the guidelines above, you can minimise the risks involved with travelling on public transport. If you have any concerns regarding public transport, visit the government website, or if it is a health concern, seek professional medical advice before travelling.
